The Groninger Museum’s exhibition Joris Laarman Lab comes to Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, in New York on 27 September 2017. Joris Laarman is one of the most noteworthy designers of the present day, working at the intersection of design, technology, science and art. After its New York run, the show, which first opened in 2015 at the Groninger Museum, will travel to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Cooper Hewitt is one of the biggest design museums in the United States, boasting a collection of more than 210,000 objects. The Groninger Museum is proud to see the exhibition launching its US tour there. Joris Laarman Lab has been compiled by chief curator Mark Wilson and contemporary art and design curator Sue-an van der Zijpp.
Joris Laarman and Anita Star founded the Joris Laarman Lab in 2004. With a team of designers and developers, they work at the intersection of design, art and science, constantly investigating new materials and innovative technologies. They’re known for their 3D-printed bridge, Heatwave radiator, Bone Chair, and Maker Chair, which can be 3D-printed anywhere in the world. The Groninger Museum has long maintained an interest in Laarman, with acquisitions, commissions and collection-based exhibitions. This show, his first large-scale solo survey exhibition, first appeared in 2015 and 2016 at the Groninger Museum.
