The Werkman Archives

The Werkman Archives contain a large amount of archival and documentary material on the life and work of the Groningen printer/artist Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman (1882-1945). This material has been collected by Jan (van Loenen) Martinet and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Martinet worked for a long time as the curator of the Stedelijk Museum’s collection of prints and drawings, gathered an extensive collection of works by Werkman, and gradually developed into a connoisseur of his work. Martinet was a board member of the H.N. Werkman Foundation from its establishment until his death in 1993.

The Stedelijk Museum has given the Archives and a substantial collection of artworks to the Groninger Museum on loan. The archives contain: Werkman’s personal possessions that he had with him when he was arrested and executed in 1945 (including cuff links, wallet, passport); correspondence from Werkman and his addressees; photographs of Werkman and his family; specialist literature (including books, exhibition catalogues, articles); publicity material (including posters, invitations); documentation on the oeuvre (including reviews, work dossiers, slides, videotapes, films, documentaries, interviews).
