International and local artists’ work to feature at Children’s Biennale

The names of the artists taking part in the 2021 Children's Biennale have been announced. From 1 June, the Groninger Museum will exhibit the work of four outstanding international artists and nine from the Netherlands, six of them from the Groningen area. The Biennale’s child ambassadors will soon be visiting local artists’ studios. The public can follow their activities at kinderbiennalegroningen.nl (in Dutch).

The artists from abroad, Andreas Schlegel & Hazel Lim-Schlegel, Donna Ong and Eko Nugroho, took part in the previous Children’s Biennale in Singapore in 2019. The Dutch artists were chosen for this edition after an intensive selection process. Bert Schoeren, Chantalla Pleiter, Harry Arling, Lambert Kamps, Nou & Herkauw, Sandra de Groot, Studio Maky, Werc Collective and Wies Noest were selected for their interactive and colourful works and installations, which activate wonder, participation and creativity. The Groninger Museum deliberately opted to showcase artists from the region in the Biennale.

Follow the child ambassadors
The Children’s Biennale is a major interactive art exhibition made by kids for everybody. Exceptionally, young people are actively involved in every aspect of organising the show. They’ll visit artists’ studios, write exhibition texts, help to plan the publicity campaign, watch the exhibition being installed, learn how to be a tour guide and much more. Free entry for under 18s
The Groninger Museum believes it is vital for children and young people to be able to experience art and culture and to visit the museum. To promote accessibility, we’ve removed one barrier: visitors 18 and under can get in free.

The Children’s Biennale would not have been possible without the partnership and support of numerous parties. The museum received support for the project from Rabobank, the VSBfonds and the Dutch government’s BIS programme. We have worked with many enthusiastic partners: Groningen primary schools, the National Gallery Singapore, JINC Groningen, IVAK (the cultural network of the towns of Delfzijl, Appingedam and Loppersum), Stichting Move in Groningen, Stichting Kunst & Cultuur Groningen, Up to Us (Groningen) and Minerva Art Academy. The Children’s Biennale was originally developed by the National Gallery Singapore.

The Children’s Biennale will open at the Groninger Museum on 1 June 2021 (date subject to change in line with pandemic restrictions).
