The King of Groningen. Jan Albert Sichterman (1692-1764)

Jan Albert Sichterman (1692-1764), from Groningen, made a fortune in the colonies. In 1745, he purchased a spacious house, located at the Ossenmarkt in Groningen, which he filled with his gigantic art collection: exotic furniture, art treasures, paintings with golden frames, and porcelain that often contained his family coat of arms. After his death, the entire collected was auctioned. The exhibition presented a varied account of Sichterman’s wealth, as for example Asian ceramics, portraits, paper cuttings, furniture, silver, chintz, and of course memories of rhinoceros Clara, his pet when he resided in Bengalen, were on display.
