While daydreaming about a new building for the Groninger Museum, former director Frans Haks envisioned a portable structure. “What about a ‘Walking Museum’ that settles by the water in summer and walks out onto it in winter when there’s enough ice?” he mused in his journal in 1986.
In summer 2026, the Groninger Museum goes for a walk. Inspired by the De Ploeg artists’ society, whose members often worked in the open air, the Walking Museum will head out into the city and countryside. Join a De Ploeg-themed cycle tour, spot the Groninger Museum’s travelling caravan in surprising locations, visit the port of Eemshaven for the Soundings project, learn about Groningen’s fascinating city markers art project, celebrate our new magazine looking back at a decade of programming at Wall House #2, or see the outdoor exhibition Into Nature: Haunted by Waters.
