In 2019 the Netherlands celebrates 100 years of universal voting rights. On 9 May we celebrated it was exactly 100 years ago since activism ultimately resulted in victory for the women’s suffrage movement in the Netherlands. In 1919, a new law decreed both men and women had the right to vote. The national celebration - with performances by Janine Abbring, Jeltje van Nieuwenhoven and Izaline Calister among others - took place at the Groninger Museum. It was a festive day with a full program and a pleasant bustle.

The exhibition Struggle! 100 Years of Women's Suffrage is on show at the Groninger Museum till 15 September 2019.
