Sandra de Groot

Sandra de Groot graduated from Minerva Art Academy in Groningen and works as an autonomous artist and an art and design instructor. She has her own brand, Atelier CHAOS, which embodies diversity and crossover in art and design.

Sandra’s installation for the Children’s Biennale, OPUS, consists of seven rope sculptures. Each is made up of thousands of knots consisting of kilometres of natural cotton rope knotted entirely by hand. By using age-old knotting techniques in an innovative, intuitive way, Sandra creates idiosyncratic contemporary sculptures, each with a different identity and tactility. With this installation, she aims to create awareness and wonder by confronting visitors with a vast quantity of knots and rope. It will undoubtedly give rise to a dialogue about time (duration), technique (craft), intensiveness and intensity. The artist will also challenge visitors to contribute to one of the sculptures in the installation. There will be work units where visitors can try their hand at knotting. During the exhibition, one sculpture – the tree – will gain in mass as the artist adds visitors’ hand-knotted contributions. After all, craft can only survive if it is passed on to new generations.
