Exhibition: From Memory to Memorial

How do you celebrate liberation when you’ve lost nearly everything? And how do you cope with the trauma of persecution and murder? This exhibition explores how the province of Groningen has commemorated the Second World War —and in particular the Shoah—over the past eighty years. We do this by sharing the personal stories of several Jewish Groningers, but also by showing how we as a society - as a collective – try to come to terms with the Shoah from 1945 onwards: in commemorations, art, research and education.

Discover the Synagogue with an audio tour

In the audio tour, Bertien Minco takes you through the moments in her family history when the synagogue in Folkingestraat or the Jewish community in Groningen was present. Bertien was born in Groningen and grew up in the Jewish community in the 1960s. Many of her ancestors also lived and worked in the city and province of Groningen. Through Bertien, you will learn about the Groningen synagogue and Jewish traditions in a very personal and accessible way!

The audio tour is offered in Dutch, English and German. You use your own smartphone and can listen to the stories as you choose.
